Most do it to meet people and to have a break from a day of work, just as how a hobby should be. While many changes have been brought to the mysterious man, Batman comics are still comics that are read by many people. And, remember, "style" is no excuse for poor storytelling (or poor artwork in general, but that's a rant for another time) Don't have large blocks of text or dialogue in each panel.
